A modern car is designed to keep its occupants safe and to transport them comfortably and efficiently to their destination. Many of the interior features are best suited to the adults who most frequently use the vehicle. If you want your vehicle to be as safe on your kids, you need to put them in a car seat and follow these South Carolina car seat law and guidelines.
South Carolina law dictates the use of car seats for children.
Infants
Infants aged one or less and weighing less than 20 pounds must be in a rear-facing seat in the back of the vehicle. It is the best option for a frontal crash because it protects the entire body with the back of the safety seat.
Children Ages 1-5
From ages one to five and with weights between 20 and 40 pounds, children can use a front-facing seat, if it contains a harness that limits your child’s movement during a crash. Children who weigh between 40 to 80 pounds must sit in a belt-positioning booster seat. Those who weigh over 80 pounds do not need a booster but only if they can press their backs against the vehicle seat and can bend their legs over the edge of the seat.
Children under six may sit in the front passenger seat only if the car has no rear seats or if children under six are already in the rear seats.
